About me.

Welcome to Worth the Candle – so called because I have decided that, despite a long and often difficult road travelled over the last thirty years, life is.  I am The Funky Crone, an author somewhere between 40 and death, with a passion for cats, books, opera, junk jewellery and walking barefoot whenever possible.

But like Holden Caulfield “I’m not going to tell you my … autobiography or anything”, because this blog is not about me. The focus of it is to be on my writing.

My aim in writing is to set the words free from the tyranny of beginning-middle-and end.  That is what a good story must have, so I have been told, often.  I have been on countless creative writing courses, read every book on creative writing that came into my hands – and after a long period of dissatisfaction with my work came to see that all I have learned was choking the life out of my creative spirit. So I am going to let language loose, let it misbehave itself. I have given myself permission to write passive sentences, write fragments of prose which are middles without beginning or ends without middles; I may indulge in adverbs, sentences with too many clauses and even split an infinitive with impunity ( at least it is a mere infinitive and not an atom.)

I will reply to as many comments as I can. I will also delete any that are insulting, offer nothing but negative feedback (I am not a sensitive flower but that adds nothing to the debate), or just attempt to push your own blog/website/product.

I do hope you find words here that you like, words that make you think and if I have encouraged anyone to break the rules I am one happy crone.

Blessings.
